WEB FAQ

Q: Do I need a logon to see data?
A: Yes! Security, Security, Security! That is the only way I can control access, usage, download and data entry for family members.

Q: May I have other access to the site besides just being able to view the data?
A: Yes. You must request and be authorized that service. It is at my discression who get these priviledges and the services they can provide us. Available items are:
  • Access to other trees/branches.
  • Allowed to view LDS data.
  • Allowed GEDCOM download.
  • Allowed view of authorized living individuals.
  • Allowed adding new records.
  • Allowed editing existing records.
  • Allowed delete existing records.
  • Allowed all/portion of the site administration.

Q: Who is the Web Master?
A: Robert Briscoe -This site is currently paid for by my private funds and as such I have sole responsibility and control of all information on this site. This site is copyrighted for my protection and as such you are required to abide by its restrictions. Any use of information from this site for other than genealogical research is not within the purview of the site. All data given to me will be used only for genealogical research. I do not sell or otherwise give out private information for living individuals. If you have questions, I will refer you to the individual who has given me permission to share their information unless they otherwise wish to remain private. Any help in funding or site ideas are welcome and appreciated.

Q: What genealogical program do I recommend?
A: I and my brother have used several. I recommend Legacy or PAF, both basic programs are free… Both are good. We like and use Legacy 5.0. We find the features and accessories with the program are worth it.

  Q: 'Living' data protected?
A: Only the names and photos of living individuals are displayed. Visitors to this site are unable to see data for living individuals. The site’s program automatically determines who is alive, but I can manually override that if an incorrect record is shown. (I can also override that if someone authorizes their data to be shown.)

Q: How does data get into this web site? Do I need a GEDCOM file?
A: Get your data into this site in just minutes by having your desktop program write your data to a standard 4.0 or 5.5 GEDCOM file. If you already have your genealogy in a desktop program (like PAF, Legacy, FamilyTreeMaker, Reunion, etc.), then the quickest and easiest way to get your data onto this site is to have your program output a GEDCOM file (standard method of genealogical data exchange) send it to me. I will then import it into the site data base. The whole process takes only a few minutes (or less, depending on how big your file is.)

Q: Is there manual data entry?
A: No GEDCOM? Of course you don't really need a GEDCOM file. I can enter your data by hand directly into the database or scan and upload your documentation. In that case, please make arrangements with me and I will return your photos and paperwork documentation (return postage free). I prefer a GEDCOM file, scanned photo or electronic documentation via email because it saves me quite a bit of typing and time.

  Q: GEDCOM export
A: I allow visitors to my site to create their own GEDCOM from a subset of my database. If I see abuses it's just as easy to disable this feature.

Q: What does LDS mean? Are LDS tags supported, data protected?
A: LDS refers to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka, "Mormons"). The LDS church invented the GEDCOM standard, so there are several LDS-specific tags. This site supports these tags, but these fields are protected and restricted unless you are an authorized “LDS” user.

Q:  How do I get a report generated?
A: When I get sufficient requests for a custom list, like "Ancestors with Today's Birthday" or "Relatives Born in England", I will create these list for you.

Q: Can the Web site information be used to put my genealogy on a CD? Can it make a book?
A: Since this site requires PHP, MySQL and a web server, it will not work on a CD. As for making books, the site does not have a specific "Create Book" function, but you may certainly print off your web pages and form them into a book. I know of people who have done that. PAF and Legacy both have this function.

Q: How do I add Photos?
A: I can upload and link several photos to one individual, or link one photo to several individuals. Give each photo a title and description as well. All Photos may be downloaded by right clicking on the photo and saving it to your computer. Browse all photos at once, or search for a keyword to help you find the ones you want. Or, pick one person and cycle through their own private list. I can provide a small thumbnail to be used on the pedigree & descendancy charts, and at the top of each individual page. All black and white documents will be changed to grayscale .jpg or .gif format.

  Q: Histories
A: In the same manner, histories can be upload and link histories or other documents (in any file format) from any individual. Again, give each document a title and description, then browse all histories at once or search by keyword.>

  Q: Backup/Restore/Optimize utility
A: To guard against disaster or facilitate a move to a new host, I back up the database monthly or when a lot of data has been added. I can then restore each table in the database. Periodically I "optimize" each table (remove deleted records, reconstruct indexes), which can increase speed and efficiency.

  Q: "What's New" page
A: The "What's New" page shows the most recently added and updated components of this site, including photos, histories, headstones, and individual and family records. I control how many days back are considered "new" and how many items (max) to display in each category. This may change depending upon how active the site gets.
