"YOU gotta PLAN!"
YOU are either going to be part of the solution or part of the
YOU are DIRECTLY RESPONISBLE with which one you are!
With the threats of terrorist attack, natural disaster, economic collapse, or a pandemic, you need to have a survival plan in place quickly that is inexpensive and doesn’t depend on relocating or you being around as a leader. You can have lots of training and supplies but a crappy plan in your head that has no chance of working.
There are a TON of survival books, websites, and “experts” out there that have terrific information, but people make the mistake of thinking that reading a book means you’ve got the knowledge and that's all it takes.
The Perfect Survival Plan should be… "whatever works for YOUR specific situation (without being a criminal)". If You’ve Planned Ahead then You'll be an asset to your and family and NOT than a looter that we have to defend ourselves against.
Every citizen in this country is part of a national emergency management system that is all about protection – protecting people and property from all types of hazards. Think of the national emergency management system as a pyramid with you, the citizen, forming the base of the structure. At this level, you have a responsibility to protect yourself and your family by knowing what to do before, during, and after an event.
If you think you are going to get help, think again. If you can’t get to help and help can’t get to you… there is no help… YOYO! In a disaster FEMA admits that they won’t be able to help everyone immediately. On their web page they want you to prepare and give guidelines for you to do so. This is a quote from their web site.
"You may need to survive on your own after a disaster. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days.
Basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer. Or, you may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You probably will not have the opportunity to shop or search for the supplies you need."
FEMA is telling you to prepare because they know that they aren’t able to help.
When you fail to prepare for you and your family, all you’ve manage to do is become USELESS to help someone… including yourself.
To create your personalized emergency plan all you have to do is follow instructions. The FEMA menu is the key. It suggests the following actions:
- Determine Your Risks
- Plan For Emergencies
- Assemble Supplies
- Protect Your Property
Determine Your Risks
In a notebook take each of their disaster situations. Write at the top of the page one disaster. (FEMA List) Now, number them in prioritized order as to which disaster you think is most likely to occur where you live. Here is my list. (I added two of my own.)
|1 Heat||7 Tornado||13 Landslide|
|2 Thunderstorm||8 Winter Storm||14 Nuclear Power Plant Emergency|
|3 Fire||9 Pandemic||15 Dam Failure|
|4 Wildfire||10 Flood||16 Earthquake|
|5 Hazardous Material||11 Civil Chaos||17 Tsunami|
|6 Hurricane||12 Terrorism||18 Volcano|
Plan For Emergencies
In this step you write down your family's specific plans for the labeled disaster. This obviously will vary with your family, location, circumstance and finances.
Example 1: Heat
I live in Texas. We are currently in a drought and it's AUGUST. Temperatures are reaching 107 ° as I type. What are my plans... Stay inside where it's cool or at the swimming pool.
Seriously, my plans included:
- Savings to afford higher electric bill during heat.
- Air conditioner equipment check & repair before heat (May).
- Keeping window screens / shades in good repair.
- A window air conditioner in the bedroom.
- Power Generator to run window air conditioner and refrigerator with loss of electricity.
Your plan will include anything you think is important. It might include meal plans because you have an electric stove. Each emergency will have a different plan of action. You can make these plans as detailed as you desire to prepare or, shall I say, "The more you DON'T want to be inconvenienced by the HEAT emergency". These plans and instructions need to be known and available by everyone in the family.
- Phone number of repairmen.
- Check list and order of things to do.
- Generator instructions.
- One Window Air Conditioner (5000 btu).
- One 75 foot water hose.
- One 5 gallon diesel container.
- Two 50 foot electric cords (air conditioner/refrigerator).
- Sunscreen lotion.
Protect Your Property
What do I need to protect/prevent?
- Wildfires - Fires
- Heat related illnesses
- Spoiled Food
- Stolen Equipment
Look at Item 1 - Wildfires. Normally a Burn Ban goes into effect with drought and heat, but you may need to change your habits. For Example: If you plan to burn trash, be sure you contact the fire department. They will need to be on site.
