Chapter 4

Rhetoric

Power has many meanings, most of which imply (a capacity for) control or force.

The ultimate way to have power of control over someone is to possess the mind, sole and body of a person. Remember in Chapter 2, Satan wanted supreme control over God and his domain. I quote a part of Moses 4 again.

Moses 4: 1-4

1 …he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.

In this, I am reminded of two scenes in the Film “Harry Potter – The Sorcerer’s Stone”. The first is where the Wizard selling Harry his wand explains Voltimort’s actions. The Wizard stated that is was “Dark Times”. He said that Voltimort did “GREAT things – TERRIBLE, BUT GREAT”. As I read about the War in Heaven and Satan’s behavior there as an angel, a “Son of the Morning”, I see that Satan was a greatly influential personage. Satan had Great Oratory and convincing powers. Just think, to convince 1/3 of the host of heaven to rebel with him was certainly quite a feat. Yes, Terrible, but still a great feat - One in which the Cosmos will be using as an example of evil throughout the eternities to come.

The second scene I’m reminded of is where Voltimort states his philosophy on power and is trying to convince Harry to join him. He states, “There is neither Good nor Evil. There is only power, and those too weak to seek it.” Satan still desires power or shall we say dominion.

God showed Moses His earthly work and then stated. “And worlds without number have I created…” and stated.

Moses 1:3
And as one earth shall pass away, and the heavens thereof even so shall another come, and there is no end to my works, neither my words.

God’s specifies what He considers His work. And in this work plainly God knew that man must have agency for He gave man his agency.

Moses 1:38.

This is my work and my glory to bring to pass the eternal life of man.

As C.S. Lewis wrote –

Free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having. ... the happiness which god designs for his higher creatures is the happiness of being freely, voluntarily united to Him and to each other in an ecstasy of love and delight compared with which the most rapturous love between an man and woman on this earth is mere milk and water. And for that they must be free.

C. S. Lewis makes note in the last statement that to have the happiness God designs for us we must be free. I agree with this statement wholeheartedly.

So let’s go back to the War in Heaven and Satan’s rhetoric there. He promised “I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost.” Under Satan’s plan, we would not have our agency. This “not having agency” becomes a serious problem. God knew that we needed our agency to obtain the “Knowledge of Good and Evil” we needed to become like unto Him with Eternal life. Satan, also, knew this was indeed fact. He so states and used this truth to deceive and entice Eve when he was trying to destroy God’s plan.

My point here is: Satan could not deliver on his promise to save everyone and give them eternal life. This was his first great lie so that he could obtain Power and Dominion over us and God (give me thine honor). He lied to us in that Great War.

Satan was NOT allowed to put his plan, that of destroying the agency of man - of force, into action. Again I quote from Moses.

3 Wherefore, because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten, I caused that he should be cast down;

4 And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not harken unto my voice.

As we look around us in this world, we see that we (mankind) exist with that God given agency. We see that Satan was cast down. What does Satan have to force us with? The answer is Nothing! So, what does Satan have? The Answer is Oratory skills or what I term as Rhetoric.

My Conclusion:
All Satan’s power over someone’s mind is in the convincing of them, using his Oratory shills, to possess in their mind his thoughts, his views and his convincing power. God has blessed men their agency… and to believe and behave in accordance with that agency (though their own thoughts). A blessing always carries with it responsibility, so along with that agency has come the responsibility of consequence. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. The ultimate influence over someone’s mind and therefore action is the “voice” or is in “words”.
